Gavin, I like the way you showed real life as merely RL, I think what you say has merit. Two ways to take tech - be a naysayer and avoid it, or recognise it’s happening and see what’s good in it that should be celebrated and cultivated.

Harrison, I don’t think it will happen. I see virtual connections as extensions of real connections primarily, but also in some cases the opportunity to begin to develop increasingly “real” connections. Just beacuse somethings offline it’s not necessarily real, just because it’s online it doesn’t mean it’s false, I think it’s more varied than that. What’s more real of me for example - what you read on here, or what you see in person? Who’s the real me, is it either?

But I note your point on the virtual communion, but then again, all it refers to in 1 corinthians is gathering, not necessarily physically….

I’ve been pondering how to duplicate my blog over in Second Life…

I was speaking to a Professor up here in Edinburgh a few months ago and he was saying that its predicted within the next 10 years 75% of the online community will have a virtual worlds avatar of one description or the other and that browsing the internet/blogs/web pages/shopping online/etc will start to be transferred to 3D worlds rather than static screen worlds like we use today.

I can see many advantages to that but think it would just be a bit OTT for many things.. just like websites that used to use Flash etc for no real reason…

SL and other virtual worlds are not there to replace ‘real life’ community or anything, its just another form of experiencing wider community. Both RL and SL have various advantages and disadvantages and both equally depend on people being ‘real’ about themselves to form genuine community.

our church is on the verge of an internet campus…wouldn’t it be cool if one of our venues possibly meeting in there… maybe someone could give a $1 offering that would show up as a $500 virtual donation…or something like that. Maybe they could sit in virtual services and get extra halos over their avatar heads for donations given, people they’ve brought, or consecutive services attended….possibilities endless right?

Even as a computer scientist the concept of virtual communion worries me.

Surely we are defeating its purpose by removing ourselves from each others presence? Sharing together?
