- has been 6 ages of the church
- each one started and finished with crisis
- each one took new determination, new nnovation and new drive
- absolutely convinced we are at one of those now
- society is open to spiritual things - a swing away from rational and decisive, a strong swing
- society’s heart is that it wants its Father back
- the new openness is wildly indiscriminate - people want to be metro-spirituals (similar to metro-sexuals)
- new form of secularism, religious emotion but divorced from religious belief
Christ is the transformer of culutre
Yes culture is fallen
We are not of this world
Not separation or endurance
But Christ becomes the converter of humanity
The goal is to work through culture and with culture through its channels to confront it with truth
Pursue the transformational culture, become transformers ourselves
We’re used to engaging a culture in a way that no longer exists
Act 2 - spoke to the Jews - we’re not there
Acts 17 - Mars Hill - this is where we should be
Don’t forget evangelism engages culture, but we also have to work to transform culture
Wrote a book called serious times
4 specific channels
- deepen our minds, forge a biblical worldview and know what it means to think Christianly about issues
- deepen our souls so that people know they are meeting something of this is not
- not sure what 3rd point was
- work with the local church
A 3rd great awakening occurring in Boston - 12th Baptist - Michael Haynes (?) - pastor of a church that started with dissenters helping on underground railroad (slaves from south to north to escape), then he gave Martin Luther King his chance, now a building being put there for working on training urban ministry leaders
Christ is the transformer of culture.
